who did the job, was it a garage???
if there was no sign of any visible cracking on the head it should have been pressure tested first for internal cracks, the condition of the block should have been inspected while the head was off, have they just filled it up, not got the airlocks out and let you drive home in it, as this will show the same symptons, i would be asking a few questions first

an airlock will make the water boil the water as it wont be moving round the engine, an airlock in the head will crack it anyway

If it blew a hose off within 5 miles I would take it back to the garage and tell them to sort it.
Something ain't right, air lock, duff stat, incompetant fitting, pressure testing not done, take it back.
