Head For 2.4td 1992

hi guys i took my head to be skimmed today as the head gasket went and the guy at the engine centre said that it was probaly the worst head he'd ever seen so i need a replacement.
im so not a petrol head so any help or advice anyone could offer would be most aprieciated.
he said that the valves that go into the 'swirl pots?' are also damaged and would need replacing,oh and my rad is f**ked too so i would probaly think its going to be even more expensive than the fly-wheel replacement last year so anyone with advice to offer please help,
