Its a plate under the engine or sump to save it getting bashed while offroading, you can also get them for the transfer box fuel tank etc, have a look under your surf you will have a few

Bash plate, I got one on or two on me truck and the Mrs has got one uses it on me when i p### her off it hurts.

Have attached pics for your perusal

I made it from 2.8mm alloy - it has bends in and a large hole for the diff drain plug - I am open to requests for building more (if you want it thicker it's no problem)
