  • Wanted: rear diff for 1995 2.4 pickup

Hi, I need a new rear diff for my 1995 2.4 diesel (2L engine) 2WD Hilux pickup, the old one is rumbling like my stomach and I've been told it's scrap and to look for a new one. I travel round the country a bit so I should be able to come and collect.

    Email me on john.rodriguez@boc.com

    Thanks!

Whats your axle code? Some 2wd trucks have the same 7 1/2" diff that are in the front of IFS 4x4's.

I have no idea./ I had a look in teh Haynes book of jokes and all it sid weas that some trucks have a 7.5" ring and some have an 8" ring. Where do I look/how do I find out?

You should have a data plate on the bulkhead, next to the heater valve.

Look for Tran/Axle and then the code.

I've looked at the plate but the print is obscured and some of the stamped digits are a bit crap too. I can't remember the flange spot colour, I think it might be yellow. I spoke to Toyota, they want £735 for a new diff (har har). They couldn't tell me if it was 7.5" or 8" but the chap said the pic he was looking at said 41:10 = 4.100 Is this the reduction ratio, in which case does this tell you what you need to know? If not I can take a look at the spot colour tonight.

Just realised I'm a dumbass, IFS 7.5" front gears WILL fit in a 7.5" 2wd rear, but the diff housing is different, so you'll need to rebuild it anyway, so you'd be better with a proper 2wd rear diff unit that'll bolt straight in from Gerry or others.

You need to measure the ring gear diameter to see what size gears you have.

If the differential is still installed inside an axle, then assuming you have open differentials, lift one wheel on the axle in question off the ground. Put the tranny in neutral, handbrake off (if is the rear axle you are testing) and put a chalk mark on the driveshaft and on the tyre. Now turn the tyre in the air through 2 full revolutions, while counting the revolutions that the driveshaft makes. The number of which will be equal to your gear ratio. You can get a more accurate count by doing 10 or 20 wheel revolutions and dividing the driveshaft turns accordingly. Why *2* wheel revolutions? Because, the ring gear in an open differential turns at the average speed of the two axle shafts connected to it. SInce one is on the ground (and thus not turning) the other axle shaft (i.e. the one you are turning) must turn twice as fast as the ring gear, so 2 revolutions on one axle + 0 revolutions on the other shaft averages out to 1 revolution on the ring gear.

Colour codes are. (but have been know to be wrong according to some)

              4.10 Pink
              4.11 Orange
              4.30 Blue
              4.37 Green
              4.56 Yellow

Thanks for that Tony - will check it out later. I couldn't check the spot colour last nigth as my able assistant wasn't around to stomp on the brake while I undo the flange nuts. I checked out the diff casing, it has the following cast on it:
AT (looks like a logo really)
                43N
                and 18
Mean anything? or do those numbers just apply to the housing not its contents?

Hi, got the flange off and the pinion shaft end is painted pink. This ties up with what the Toyota man and TonyN said. Just need to find the right one at the right price!

I was quoted £250 for an entire back axle (wheels etc, bolt it straight on) from Just Hilux in Essex, does it seem reasonable?
