My yard owner has a 4 year old fresian she is thinking of selling because she finds him very uncomfortable to ride and paranoid about everything.

He has a fantastic temperament and she loves him to bits but is getting fed up with him still spooking badly at puddles, leaves, cars, beer cans, sheep, dogs, kids, windows and wheelie bins even though she's been hacking him out for a year!

She wants to keep him but doesn't really know what to do next with him

Did you have Noble from young and if so , was he like that?

Did you find him uncomfortable to ride until he gained some bulk and top line?

Will dig out some pics of my cobs to put on

Not 'proper' looking horses like your Noble though - what a beauty

I bought Val as an 8y\o, BUT he was only backed a year before I bought him. He was left to run wild in a field for the first 7 years of his life, so he was completely unspoilt! He was also only gelded 3 months before I bought him (unfortunately) and had a pretty impressive topline already.

I found him very 'different' comfort wise to ride, but the thing with Val is that he has got a massive stride and not the 'usual' high knee action of the friesian (although he can do a pretty impressive impression of being a real friesian every now and again LOL). The only thing that I find impossible on him is the sitting trot!!!!
He was quite spooky in the beginning, seeing that the guy I bought him from used him to hack around on a farm (he never even cantered under saddle until I got him). He is not bad spooking wise at all now, the only thing he does when he sees something he's unsure of when we are hacking is to do the levade and just keep it for a few seconds(he is being trained in 'airs above ground), but usually settles quite well when you talk to him. Sometimes it is also good to just ignore him

Training wise he has been brilliant. He is incredibly keen. At the start he found the basics really difficult (normal circles etc) so we just started playing around with the piaffe and passage which he got the hang of almost immediately.
I'm lucky seeing that John (his trainer) specializes in the training of friesians and also does the spanish doma vaquera (Val is the only friesian in SA trained in DV). He is an incredible trainer and rider.

I think the thing with friesians is that you can never 'force' them to do anything, they are very sensitive and very keen to learn, BUT can get bored very quickly. When they have decided that they WILL NOT do something, they turn very stubborn and then you have to start asking very nicely!!!!

I will never own any other breed ever again!!!

my friend has a friesian and i've ridden her a few times. she's not spooky at all - you could put a complete novice on her. she only breaks out of walk if you make her! she has a different action than i'm used to but then she's 2 hands taller and immensely wider than my little welsh cobs. my new 6yr old welshie is a complete spook-monster despite having been hunted for the last 2yrs and having done plenty of hacking - i dont think he'll ever change. my old one is 22 and still spooks at plenty. i think some horses are just neurotic!

why would you want to ride a Friesian cow don't you know the Guernsey and Jersey cows are better temperment
