This photo was done very cheaply using an old M42 50mm screw thread lens and a lens reversing ring. The lens reversing ring allows you to turn the a lens around on the camera body so the inner lens element faces out. A standard 50mm focal length camera lens (the kind of thing you can't give away these days!!) then becomes a very effective macro lens.

I bought a Nikon-to-52mm filter thread ring on e-bay for £4.99 the 50mm lens was free. Or of course you spend £250+ on a true macro lens!
