  • morocco overland

Hi all have been looking at this for some while now and now think it’s a real goer. It is an overlanding trip to morocco with most of the routes being none tarmac pistes. There are still issues I have to resolve and find the forum horizons unlimited very useful source of information and able to chat to people who have done these routes many times and travelled around the country http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/

The route was taken off a 4x4 morocco overlanding trip so it has been geared for 4x4s. It has been shortened a bit as on the trip you fly over there and do 2 full weeks, whereas we would have to drive so have taken 4 days off for getting there and back!

Accommodation would either be in gites which are along every route below and or tents out in the open.

The best time to do this would be sept / oct 2011 as its hot but not too hot (25 oC) as it is sub Sahara climate and the days are still long enough to get a decent travel in the daylight. It is open to any vehicle including bikes as I think a mixed convoy would be best.

The below are the routes and depending how long it takes to do them then could have a few days in Marrakech or Casablanca.

The below coordinates are lat and long coords in decimal form, if you copy and paste them in to google maps then it will take you to the relevant place and you can see the route and look at photos people have taken at various places along the routes. The coordinates were taken from a useful program http://www.getlatlon.com/ it is in google maps format the cross hair will give you lat and long of any place in the world

Any feedback for interest would be greatly received!

i was looking for sept / oct 2011 but if i do go then and its great then would probably go again the next year hehe! i know it would be a tall order for you to get the truck ready by then but could sit in with some one if othere people go and get a survey / bike convoy going!

Oh the truck will be sorted for summer (famous last words), but this yr is shaping up to be a busy one..can't really commit to much..especially so early on.

I was thinking more of a trip west, maybe a couple of wks, through eastern Europe into Russia. There's a rally, possibly called the banger rally where you buy a banger and bugger off through the wilds of Russia, if we could get a route map for that it would be cool.

yeah i have seen that you get the car drive it to russia somewhere and selll it for charity ! there is a similar one www.dakarchallenge.co.uk

i did see this ages ago and this got me started on the morocco thing!

some of the trips they do look very good and politically dangerous! but thats half the fun!

haha if this little outing goes well then if time money and politics is right then it would be RTW and road of bones for me!

hi Rich see the excuse to go for a long drive has tempted you!

the reason ive posted it up 8 months in advance is might need to save a little money for the trip as will probably do about 4000 miles which is about 20 fill ups plus need to get the vehicle ready and source a few parts to take with us like engine & suspension parts just in case as well as sundry items like jerry cans and 2 spare wheels etc so instead of off roading with no weight in the truck there might be about 200 - 300 kgs which is a different kettle of fish! at the moment im building a winch bumper for the trip!

if you want give me a bell on 07787 545500

just managed to put route one on to google maps! seems its like a free memory map but you need the coordinates and have to manually punch them in but it gives you a good idea of the route rather than looking at it on a map.

you have to put it into satellite mode as there is no road in map view! i think the highest point is 2500m

                http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...f14463f6d3f74f

will be doing the rest of the routes when ive worked out the decimal coordinates form deg min sec think the whole route will start from Midelt then go south west and back up north to Marrakesh

Photo's have titles, in full Res and "Geotagged" which hopefully will be useful.

Hi Matt - absolutely stunning mate, I am so jealous.

What was your ballpark total cost if you don't mind me asking, and was it guided or did you nav between you?

With a sorted out Toyota to start with.

I spent 33 nights away and drove 5600 miles

Costs for me and my boy

Ferry Plymouth to Santander £600 return

Ferry Algeciras to Tanger Med 170 euro return

Cost in Spain (fuel and campsites) is around 450 euro return

Cost in Morocco (fuel, campsites when used and some food / water / drinks) around £600 for around 28 days there

So around £1800 all in for 2 people for 5 weeks.

Fuel costs ~ 65p per L in Morocco, bread ~ 12p a loaf, bottled water £1.60 for 10L, Campsite £4 per night. Its cheap as chips once at Morocco

My trips have all been self planned and navigated (Tablet PC with GPS and Garmin software and maps). This year I was with a mate in the LR for some of the time and some time was by myself. I did a few hundred miles of desert pistes alone (Does that break rule one? )

Morocco is a fantastic place to visit and once you have been you're hooked.

About 30c a kilometre - EA to SA I calculated about 50c per k - sounds a very reasonable trip! Soon as I get sorted with a new vehicle I'll be pestering you for advice!
