  • Landy Rally Euro 4x4 Charity Drive 14-22 Sept 2011

The dates for Landy Rally 2011 have been announced. Unlike previous years, these new dates don’t clash with Abingdon 4x4 Festival, so more than likely after a day's rest in Calais we'll go straight to Abingdon en mass!

    What is Landy Rally?

Launched in 2007, Landy Rally is a 3,000 mile / 4,500 km mile non-speed charity drive for all makes of non-modified 4x4 vehicle covering 11 countries in 9 days. Teams raise funds for their nominated charities, no min/max limits.

Starting in Valkenburg near Maastricht, Holland, we pass through the Black Forest in Germany, drive the legendary Stelvio Pass in the Italian Alps plus a further two mountain passes, BBQ & off-roading at Val d’Isere in the French Alps (the largest and highest off-road site in Europe at 2,700m), camping alongside Lake Como in Italy, a night at a Mediterranean beach resort in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France, shopping in the duty-free Principality of Andorra, driving across the magical Spanish Pyrenees (tarmac & off-road including two evening dinners included in the entry fee), off-road driving + BBQ with a local french 4x4 club in the beautiful Dordogne region, concluding with a prize-giving dinner in Calais. All this plus the teams have raised thousands for their nominated charities every year – over £100,000 since we started! Who can ask for more? The camaraderie and fun associated with Land Rally is an experience you will never forget!!

    See http://www.landyrally.com for details.

True, the majority were Landies, mostly standard though, but the odd Jap did make an appearance. Best of all was the guy with the Suzuki SJ. I asked him during the event as he was all scrunched up at the wheel what on earth possessed him to go out and buy a Zuke when he had a perfectly good Nissan Navara sitting at home ... especially as he was 6' 4" and had a bad back before the start line!

"That's easy he said, where's the challenge in that?" mmmmm, says it all really.

The Toyota BTW was pictured at that BIG playground they call Val d’Isére - it's spectacular!!!

I was only messing with ya! Seriously it looks a good trip and I wish I could commit to something like that, unfortunately most of the time life gets in the way!

I'd love to have a go and get involved with that.. The road plan is very similar (albeit a bit shorter) to one I've planned years ago to eventually do

if funds would allow I'd sign up for that

If it's for all makes, why is it called a 'Landy Rally'?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Simple! Originally it was called Landy Rally because it was only open to LR. After the second year I had more and more requests from non-LR owners to take part, and because I've never been blinkered when it comes to 'other' 4x4's (they all l have their good and bad points), I gladly opened it up to everyone. Besides, "Landy Rally" had a good ring to it, so it all fitted nicely!

Funny you should mention LR/other makes, for I have to say, it would be good to see another marque take the laurels rather than solely Land Rovers. See what i mean ...

                        Mmmm, less said the better.

Nah, wouldn't work. Me an sprogs don't get on. Granted they have their uses, but even as wheel chocks they wringgle about too much and are a bit squidgy. Suppose you could always leave them with 'er indoors and team up with somebody on the forum who's up for a laugh ... anyone on here fancy 11 days of mayhem next September? Smego's paying!

                          Hi Tom,

We will be in the Dordogne again ready to feed you. My Surf is going great and the old 109 is plodding on.

Best of luck with the rally.

                          Andrew

Cheers Andrew. Hopefully better turn out next year. One of the guys ended up in Paris of all places, and that wasn't even on our route (all the rest went back to Calais via Le Mans). Made a good photo though. We were trying to work it out how he took it, as he must have stopped in the middle of the road to snap it ... scary!!!
