It was a good run out yesterday! Had a good play in the woods with cal and carl! and only got stuck in the mud once were everyone else did! I wanted to see if good old grunt could get me through but bottomed out so that put an end to that theory! Good to see bibs and again spectating! Hehe!
Vince the problem was a coolant pipe to the expansion bottle popped and when I put it back! Had trouble bleeding it as a lot of air in the system so we thought head gasket might of gone and exhaust gases where getting into the coolant system hence bubbling. But when AA came eventually we filled it with water (engine was cold at this point not like before so putting cold water in a warm engine might not have been the best thing to do) all was fine no bubbling and he had a laser thermometer showed that the engine was 92deg top hose slightly cooler bottom hose cooler again but radiator side of thermostat was 54 and engine side was 92 i.e. thermo not opening when it should and I have changed the thermo recently so I think there is pressure in the coolant system which caused the pipe to blow off but will use a pressure gauge on each cylinder to see for sure if head gasket had gone or it’s a thermo issue! I might run the car without a thermo any thoughts?Last edited by dannyboy77; 8 November 2010, 20:21.http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/showthread.php?t=55797

just taken the surf out for a quick drive and a wash! it got up to temp and stayed there nicely no over heating! and looked at the expansion bottle and no bubbling but the cap was letting off pressure so the thermo must be jammed or something but getting a compression tester so can finally put to bed this problem if compression is OK will remove thermo and see what is wrong. May run the surf without the thermo in??http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/showthread.php?t=55797

You need a breather tank set up, it's like having extra capacity in the cooling system.
Basically you seal the radiator with a valveless cap (no spring part in it) and fit the pressure cap to the breather tank.
Expansion tanks, which is what you have fitted is a different system, they're fine up to a point but not very good at keeping the cooling system full. They sould have been fitted to the 2.4 Surfs at the factory, probably would have saved a lot of craked heads.
