Roads through Imber will not be open in August because of training displaced by the Olympics and
Mission Support Training for 4 Mechanised Brigade, the next brigade deploying to Afghanistan
(see overleaf for details of Imber Access for the rest of 2012).
In June, Tread Lightly volunteers, working with MOD, placed 37 rights of way posts/signs on:
Bulford 7, 14 and 24.
Figheldean: 4, 15 (Old Marlborough Coach Road), 16, 17, 18, 19, 26.
Milston: 4, 5 (Milston Drove), 19 and South Tidworth 30.
In July it is planned to sign the rights of way in Bulford Range Danger Area.
TRAINING IN JUNE
Activity on the Plain during the first three weeks of July will be low level and centred on Oxford
University Officers’ Training Corps and Lothian and Borders Army Cadet Force annual camps.
9 July onwards sees the Royal School of Artillery conducting live firing with 105mm Light Guns and
AS90 self-propelled guns.
23 – 27 July sees exercise CROSSED CANNONS (23 – 27 July) with extensive artillery live firing
(late night firing on 24 and 26 July). The Land Warfare Centre’s second largest armoured exercise
(SABRES THRUST) also takes place during this week with armoured manoeuvre by Challenger 2
tanks and Warrior armoured fighting vehicles across the whole Plain.
23 July onwards preparations begin for the next Op HERRICK Mission Specific Training (MST)
exercise involving 4 Mechanised Brigade which starts on 14 August.
Live Firing. Firing is closely managed to ensure that legal noise limits are not exceeded and
disturbance is minimised. Although some may find the noise intrusive, it is well below legal limits.
Late Firing on Larkhill Ranges: 3rd, 5th, 10th, 12th, 17th, 19th, 24th, 26th, 31st July

AS90 Firing from Salisbury Plain East: Nil.
AS90 Firing from Salisbury Plain West & Tilshead, Chitterne, Shrewton triangle: Nil.
Complaints about Firing Noise should be made to (01980) 620819.
Military Flying. Helicopters, Hercules (C130) and fast jets may be active at any time. Fox Covert
& Everleigh Dropping Zones will be active for most of the period.
Complaints about low flying should be made to 0207 218 6020 or e-mail lowflying@mod.uk.

Access to Salisbury Plain is regulated by Salisbury Plain Military Lands and Bulford, Larkhill and
Imber Range Byelaws. This Newsletter is published up to 6 weeks before the event and urgent
training bids may come in subsequently. Always comply with local signs and flags.
Access timings can be found on the SPTA Walks Line: (01980) 67 4763.
A new format is in use = We welcome feedback.
Larkhill Ranges. Rights of way through Larkhill Ranges are closed when red flags are flying.
No firing is planned for: 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, 21st, 22nd, 28th, 29th July
Note. During range fires access may be denied (risk of unexploded ordnance “cooking off”).
Bulford Ranges. Rights of way through Bulford Ranges are closed when red flags are flying.
No firing is planned for: 7th through to 29th July (the annual maintenance period).
Imber Ranges. Difficult terrain and unexploded military debris makes it hazardous to leave the
tarmac roads. The public are excluded from Imber Ranges except when the roads are opened to
reduce journey times across Imber Ranges. It is planned to open roads through Imber as follows:

St Giles’s Day is celebrated each year with a church service in Imber. The opportunity has been
taken to open the roads that weekend. Unfortunately, due to essential road works, the road from

10 Nov (1000) 10 Nov (1200) Remembrance Day Church Service.
Only the road from Warminster will be open.
21 Dec (1600) 7 Jan (0800) Christmas and New Year
Notes.

2. These dates may change if operational training needs dictate.
