Greeting oh suzi guru.I have taken off bunnies bullbar and the spring hangers are now horizontal and not quite touching the bumper.Am i right in thinking that the sammy rear springs that are now on the front are to long, which means that I will have to strip the spring packs and put the old front spring top leaf on the new springs so as they are the right length for the hangers or have I made a boo boo some where????

Looks like you need to ditch top 2 leaves at least and substitue 2 old front ones . I will look for you tommorrow .

I have been looking into this. I think you need to extend the chassis rails by 2-3" and move the spring perches forward, which then means you will need a prop spacer.

The other way to go is to weld fixed extended perches on the front (they are like lift shackles but longer) and fit reverse shackles (in other words the hinged shackles are at the back of the springs). Apparantly this improves on-road handling, as well as giving a bit of lift.

I hope that all makes sense????

When putting the rear springs on the front you remove some of the rear leaves and use some of the front leaves. The front springs on an SJ are stronger to take the weight of the engine.

I was thinking of making up some banana shaped shackles when I move the rear springs to the front. See pic. They would allow the springs to flatten out for more flex but wouldn't foul the bumper. Luckily I have got some 1/4" steel plate lying around to cut them out of. Just a thought...............

sound like a good idea phil,in the mean time can I build up the front spring by adding extra leaves,so as the front is the same hight as the back but the spring length stays the same?

I dont think Phils idea will work as the spring will still be to long even with those 'bent ' shakcles . As I pointed out today the axle has moved forward as the spring centre pin is now forward of original position , which is not a bad thing ,but you need to do wot Phil suggests with the reverse shackle position where the fixed shackle reverts to the front , but this will then push the axle back , not good .
My opinion , at the mo , is to rebuild the front sping pack with the top 2 original springs and pack out with the the remaider of rear leafs .

Hope that helps , I have consumed 1 good bottle of red !

There is a bit of discussion here about using the original front top spring and some of the rear pack. Hope it's helpful.

I spend almost as much online time there as I do here these days. I should get out into the garage and do some work!
