Rocksliders build

got round to ordering some steel a few weeks ago, and started on making my own rocksliders for the landcruiser

made some foot plates




then outriggers


then fitted outriggers to chassis to temp mount the main slider for tack welding in place


and added some gussets


tree fender fitted


extra gussets and support piece added and painted


still to add an anti-slip strip (cut from old factory side-steps) to top of treefender, and then fit on the landcruiser

main slider and treefender made from 50x50x4mm box, gussets and footplates cut from 100x6mm steel flat

would it fit a surf? if so would you be interested in making some more (and for how much?)

They look really good, I wish I have the time (and skill) to do that.

they would probably fit a 3rd gen - as chassis same shape as colorado - maybe the chassis is same on a 2nd gen, not sure

sorry - wont be making another set in a hurry, well not with my 30yr old 140amp arc welder anyway - a MIG welder would be nice!

there must be at least 20hrs going into making these, and lots of tea!

my welding skills have improved considerably during this and my boot storage rack build - but i still dont get a good well each time.

circular mitre chop saw a must for cutting the steel.

i spent £170 on steel - to make my boot storage rack and these sliders, and have about 1/5th of the steel left!
so raw materials dont cost too much, and if you got offcuts not full lengths it could be cheaper,

but takes so much time - i need a break from spending weekends and evenings working on them, plus full time job

Looks good Andy. May sound a silly question, but are you just clamping the sliders to the chassis or going to weld it? I only ask cos you have obviously made a clamp set up and also you have already painted the footplates!

yup clamping - thats what the other landcruiser boys have done!
seems welding to chassis not a good idea - i cant remember reason why

It mostly about buggering up the temper of the chassis metal, in case you make it brittle, but thats mostly on big trucks, plenty of people weld up holes in chassis'ississs..., its not really important on smaller vehicles.

Most people weld them, but you need to good at it to get a decent fix, while welding at odd angles.

The heavier the truck, the more I'd want them welded on than clamped from a strength point of view.

I see what you are saying, but if the bolts gave way before this happened - which would be the only point in bolting not welding - then would the sliders be of any use in the first place? (If you see what I'm saying!! )

hi Nick

they are 12mm diameter bolts, and vary between 110 and 100mm long.
some are 10.8 grade and some others 8.8
