  • Trayback 4runner project.

Now before i get slated because its a 4runner on Surf site or because its ugly and some people might not like it, i thought i would bring things upto date on my project, i came on here some time ago to ask a few questions and i think some one asked to keep posting up some pics and let them see how i went on, iv done all the work my self over about 15 months and theirs plenty more to do, so hope some of you like it.....

    many thanks gloves.

Good job, glad you're sorting the axles to, was going to say lots of effort for a truck with bugger all suspension flex!

Surfs and 4Runners are the same, don't worry about posting it.

Good work, but why chop up a Surf to make into a trayback.
Wouldn't it have been easier to use a pick-up with a solid front axle and extend the rear of the cab ?

I guess because he had a 4Runner not a Pickup lying around?

No point in spending ages cleaning it and trying to sell it, then have to find a extra or normal cab pickup and buy that, Surfs have a much nicer interior than a pickup as well.

He wasn't going to use a Pickup front axle anyway, so would still have had to mess with drivetrain.

Recycle man! Utilise what you have.....

i used a 16` ton hydrolic pipe bender just the same as you buy from machine mart, i didnt fill any tubes with sand or pre warm the tube first to get to bend.

its all about the way the tube sits in the die`s and is shaped during the bend,
iv been a plumber for 20` od years so iv picked up a few tricks, first thing i did when i bought it, was grind the dies to a smooth finish to fit the tube perfectly and this gives a smooth arch i also cut the corners off the machine to give closer bends and also used 2 x 12mm bent plates to bend against, rather than the formers supplied with it. the bends are perfect no kinks or ripples. and if you use good tube and not scaffold you should have no problems.

The reason is just Pro`s and Cons .... if you sit down and compare the amount of work to get the same result it would cost you a lot more with the hilux pick-up than a surf or 4runner.

                  hers just a few :

                  wheel base
                  axle widths
                  engine
                  exhaust
                  suspension
                  cab size
                  chassi dimensions
                  brakes

a lot of people think they are the same, and their not. and iv done the 3.0ltd
conversion on my other hilux pick-up and theirs a lot of work just on the engine.
