  • Fitting Engine Temperature monitor

I bought this (pic1) on flebay for £52 including postage from Australia. It took 4days to arrive, pretty quick i thought. Anyway this is how it went. Firstly i removed the lower trim on the drivers side dash to allow access to wiring. whilst this trim was off i removed the speaker and replaced with a new kenwood kfc 1058s both sides. pic2. Then i drilled a 7mm hole in the side of the storage box under the radio and pulled the wires through, pic3. Then i routed the temperature wire through the bulkhead, pic4, across the engine bay and connected this to a stud in the inlet manifold pic5 don't fit it on the exhaust side of the engine because it gives a inaccurate reading). This done i then found an earth and ignition switched live in the loom under the steering column to connect the power cables from the unit. pic6 I also fitted a switch on the dash pic7 so the unit can be switched on or off as required. Fortunately there was already an unused i/s/live and earth from spots which were previously fitted and removed from the truck. The live is wired from here to the supply terminal on the dash switch. Then the live wire from the unit is wired to the load terminal on the dash switch. Then the unit and the switch are both earthed, wiring complete. Not being a big fan of the scotchlok, i then soldered all spliced wires and covered with heat shrink pic8.
I will be removing all scotchlocs and soldering all joints when it gets a bit warmer. Then it is just a case of fixing the unit and setting the alarm temp and thats it, job done. (pic9)From start to finish, the whole job including replacing both front speakers took about 40 mins.
