    Yes it is
I've done it to my 4runner, it's a little awkward but it can be done. You have to brace up the inside of the o/s rear pillar where it attaches to the car then remove the tailgate cover and put the catch mech there. You will to brace this on the inside also (This means the window mech has to come out - you can do it with the glass insitu but ensure you support it)

if you put a search in for spare wheel carrier you can find some info out there as someone else was asking the same question.but i think the out come was going to be a big job. but have a look in the search and see what you think

if at first you dont succeed then sky diving aint for you

it is possible but you need a bit of engineering knowhow, some metal plate, a welder, drill, hammer (essential item!!), waxoil, nuts, bolts, paitence & some grim determination to suceed!!
(mind you, with all that anything is possible!! )
          NO WORRIES!

Another possibility is look for a scrapper with the rear hinged carrier already in place, then purchase the tailgate and carrier parts off of that one. Your only big job then is to reinforce the o/s rear pillar and fit the new tailgate.

You need to fit the catch section first to the tailgate so you can then fit the swing out bit after. You'll soon see the position as it can really only go in one place.
              Tailgate
Position it, mark and drill the holes (careful of the window) then take out the window mech, slide the window up (taking care not to drop it out of the tailgate) You will have to make a plate up for the inside of the tailgate tfor the catch to fasten to. Mine was shaped to fit the 3 sets of holes from the bottom up then a single piece for the top ones. I also welded nuts on the back so it made fitting easy. This was then bonded & waxoil'd into place.

Look on ebay under 4runner ??? its in america for £60. It looks in the ad as if theres everything apart from the reinforcement you need in the body
