Get the AXLE details from your VIN plate in the engine bay. These are for the rear diff.

In Surfs the letter at the beginning of the code is normally G indicating an 8" diameter ring gear. F would indicate 7.5", E is 7.1", H is 9" and the list is endless

The next two digits indicate the gear ratio as follows:
      25 indicates 4.556 gearing
      26 indicates 5.571 gearing
      28 indicates 4.300 gearing
      29 indicates 4.100 gearing

The last digit indicates the no. of pinions
      2 indicates 2 pinions
3 indicates 2 pinions with LSDiff
      4 indicates 4 pinions
5 indicates 4 pinions with LSDiff

So if your AXLE code reads G254 then you have an 8" ring gear, 4.556 gearing, 4 pinions. I believe the 4.556 gearing suits 31" tyres which did not necessarily come as stock on early 2nd gens, so thats good if you are upgrading to 31's
