Hi, mine is a 1990 SSR and having problems with black smoke and specially when climbing hills, it also loses power resulting in me dropping it down a couple of gears just to get it up.
Not sure if this is common ??

Seems to be a fairly common occurance.
First of all find out when the injectors were last replaced.
Have a look at some of the post regarding "redex" etc
Here in NZ I use Moreys which we flick into our Fire Trucks, it helps to clean injectors, but if they are buggered then cleaning them does not do a lot.
Another avenue to explore is to re-route the crankcase breather pipe.
This is covered in detail on the Aussie Surf Site, basically you want to stop the oil vapour in the blowby gas getting into your intake system and clogging it all up.
I have made a nifty little air/oil separator taht does this for me.
Along with reconditioned injectors, full boost on the steel snail (turbo)
and an opened up intake pre the air cleaner the grey beast is running a lot cleaner

That "Moreys" is good,but i think the main reson is it contains something to make the deisel burn cleaner, when I stopped using it(ran out) my surf was just as smokey.
I replaced my injectors which helped, but after the head replacement it is really good now. The old head was full of carbon (& cracks ) the valves were fairly sad, this combined with dodgey injectors made for a bit of a mystery drive for anyone behind me.
Definate power increase after all the work ($3500 worth, I hoped I'd notice something) and I'm not as dubious to put my foot down, now I know people won't die in the dense black exhaust smoke. I'm a little suspect about my fuel pump as well,but I'm not in any position to contemplate any more work just now.

As others said, give it good service before worrying to much about it generally getting worn out, get the injectors and pump serviced, some additive to clean the gunk outta the fuel system, also check all the vacuum lines for splits and broken hoses.
