  • Parking Brake Adjustment

Thought I would put this up for others.

Scenario: My Parking Handling had started to come right out to my knee when putting on the brake. I found that with 4Runners the parking brake lever should apply within 7-9 clicks and on other models approximately 11-17 clicks.

Pulled the Parking Brake Handle and started to count the clicks [came to 20-22 clicks after doing this several times to make sure]

Put blocks under the front wheels, let of the Parking Brake and put the vehicle on Stands. Whilst on the stands thought I would clear out the Rear Brakes from all the mud whilst off-roading so proceeded to Remove the Drum. This took some persuasion with a rubber mallet tapping around the Drum on the Off Side but was stuck on the Near Side.

Pulled out the Rubber bung from the back of the Drum and placed two screwdrivers through to separate the Adjuster from the Return Spring. Proceeded to turn the Adjuster with a screwdriver until the Drum wasn't binding anymore.

Cleaned out the Drum as best as possible checking Rear Brake Shoes were okay etc.

Next Climbed under the vehicle near the transfer case and sprayed WD40 on the two nuts on the Adjusting Arm [Picture 1]. Loosened off the lower nut down a couple or so of threads and tightened on the top nut to pull the cable tighter.

Checked the Parking Brake Lever several times by counting the clicks...still seemed a little slack so I thought I would put everything back together and lo and behold with the wheels on the ground the Parking Brake is back and no longer does the vehicle drive past the Parking Brake if I put it in Drive [Unless applying the accelerator of course]

Picture of the Parking Brake Adjuster Arm with WD40 sprayed all over it.

Picture of the Rear Brakes [thought I would add captions to help others]

The Shoes were binding...it was the cable that had become slack

Couldn't find anything else, tried tracing everything just to be sure.....just think the cable had become slack with constant use and just needed tightnening up.

The cable seems to unwind over time, making it longer, especially after being dunked in mud. Lindas is on the end of its adjustment and needs a new cable, the 2.4 needs tightening as well as its hits you in the chin as you pull it!

Also the rear drums hold sand and grit really well, the little bits grind the shoes away. Thats why I'm going disc rear on our trucks.

Tony, if you are putting in rear discs, are you using those with inbuilt parking brake drums, as with Volvo 940 or are you going to use a propshaft brake?

I'll use rear calipers with a handbrake lever built in, Mondeo ones seem to the easiest to get hold of.

loosely its..early non vented pickup front discs, with a spacer machined to fit them tight over the ring in the middle of the rear hub. Then its just a matter of making a caliper mounting braket that bolts to 2 of the bearing retaining studs, getting the caliper in the right place on the disc.
