  • soot deposit on my front wheels

I'm getting a sooty deposit on my front wheels only. As you can see in the picture, the back wheels remain comparitively clean. This is just through normal road driving, so AFAIK there's no particular reason why the front wheels should be any dirtier than the back.

    Any ideas why it is?

    Cheers,

Brake dust, perfectly normal, the reason its on the fronts only as they have disc brakes, the rears use drums which tend to contain the dust inside, plus you front brakes do the majority of your braking and therefore wear quicker and generate more dust.
This situation is the same on the vast majority of cars today.

If you dont want to damage the Alloy then just use soapy water on them as soon as they start getting dusty - it will stop the dust eating the alloy for breakfast lunch and tea and pitting the surface

          Brake pads

My advice is ALWAYS use original Toyota brake pads.
I have never had any problems with my aluminium wheels, neither on my Runner or my Corolla because I have always bought original pads from Toyota. You may have to pay a little more for those but they last a lot longer and give better brake performance.
