Has anyone noticed when they remove the rocker cover cap while the engine is running, should it puff and spit oil out?

IMO that is not a bad sign, shows your pressure is up and oil getting sloshed around.
I would be more concerned if it didnt do that.

mmmmmm yes your right in saying it's a good sign that oil is sloshing about, but there is gasses blowing out aswell, just woundered if that was normal too, its not to bad but is noticable, was wondering if anyone else had taken there cap off while the engine was ticking over?

Snowwolf.

This might indicate that you have a valve leaking gas pass the stem into rocker cover. Unless you are losing oil and the engine is running well I would leave well alone. It's not an engine killer and the only cure is to replace the valve or guide and that is not a minor job. It will probably mean that if your cylinder head goes for any other reason then you will have to replace the valves, but then hey you would anyway.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

this is piston blow-by and is very common with these engines.(combustion gas leaking past the rings into the crankcase). when they start to breathe really heavily they will force oil up the breather pipe into the intake pipe before the turbo and consume the oil. if it aint using much oil dont worry about it.

I changed the oil a week ago and have done 500 miles and the oil level has not moved on the dipstick, I just wondered if the next time any fellow surfs have there head under the bonnet, could they remove the cap and see what their surf engine does.

They should all do it, every motor produces a curtain amount of crankcase pressure, its when it starts to use more oil than usual and blocks up the intakes that you need to be concerned.
