  • Multi mode 4x4 light flashing and alarm beeping

Hi all,had a problem with my 3rd gen ssr-g multi mode 4x4 dash light coming on for a while now and today an alarm started beeping in time with the light on the dash while travelling down the motorway so I need to address this.
It started a year ago, drove from near Aberdeen to Birmingham with an empty car trailer and wasn't hanging about on the way down.
When I pulled up the slip road at Birmingham the 4x4 engagement light was flashing,4 green wheel and orange center diff icon all flashing.p,nothing had been pressed or engaged by myself.
The 4x4 was not engaged as I made a wheel spin on loose dirt to check.
Tried a few things and the light sprayed on.
I pressed to button on the gear stick and heard the solenoid engage and disengage the front axle so that was fine, after a short while the light stayed off after turning the ignition on and off, engaging 4wd via the lever and reversing etc.
I got it checked by a 4x4 (mostly land rover) mechanic I know,he changed the gearbox and diff oils and the light fund not come on again till around 5 months ago when I used the 4wd button to get off a slippy bit if grass,no problems but a few dates later I jumped into my surf, turned the ignition on and here's this light flashing again,a quick press of the button on and off and it stays off till the next time I turn the ignition off, when I turn it back on its flashing at me.
This happens 8 times out of 10 and nothing fixes it.
I have had it in 4wd via the ever,4 high,4 low etc and it stays off a while but always comes back on.
The mechanic has no idea what it could be so I'm kind if on my own.
Today I drove down from dundee to Carlisle carrying a bit if weight and was cruising about 80-85 mph no bother then the light started flashing and an alarm was beeping in time with the flash.
This has never happened before, never heard this beeper going nor has the light came on when moving except the very first time it happened.
Pulled into the services, engaged 4wd via the lever, drove forward, reversed and eventually it went off,now every time I turn the ignition off and on the light is flashing but a quick on off of the switch and it stays off.
I read a bit about the axle solenoids giving bother and how to "fix" them but unsure if that's what my problem is being caused by.
Sorry for the war and peace description but just trying to be accurate with this fault,it's really annoying as apart from this light I have had no bother with it or any of the surfs I have owned before.
Any info appreciated, got the return journey to do on Friday so not wanting to be in fear of the gearbox giving up the ghost if someone says it's a it's a sensor or something simple.
The a/t light for hot gearbox oil was not on on either of the 2 motorway events either if that helps.
Hope someone can help, thanks in advance, lee

        Thanks for the reply.
Apart from stinking aftermarket wheels my surf is completely standard,no led lights or anything extra added.
That must have been a nightmare to track down that fault you had!
