  • Rear Diff change write up ?

    Hi All,

Has anyone got a write up on how to change the rear diff on a 2.4,

Ive currently got a G254 however i am taking delivery this week of a G145 to match the Front Diff i bought incorrectly, Doh!

Changing the front was a pain but easy enough, just a load of nuts and bolts where as i cant see how to do the rear, do i need to pull wheels off and drive shafts out? if so how? Note : I'm a Sunday / home / clueless mechanic :-)

Or does the diff just unbolt off the axle and rebolt the replacement (obviously the prop shaft aswell)

Any help would be great, Pics would be even better, lady bird books style would be perfect LOL

    Cheers Jason

there is some write ups around but its not that hard.

most important step, UNDO OIL FILLER PLUG before you drain oil out.
basically you have to pull axles out a bit. so wheels off, disconnect hand brake cable, unbolt hub, pull axle out a few inches.
unbolt driveshaft (do not let it pull apart).
    unbolt diff.
    then reverse for the install.

btw keep your old diff. you can only use toyota ring&pinion on the 4.8 diffs. to use the stronger aftermarket gears you need to use your old diff as they won;t fit your 4.8 diff head.

      Thanks tweak'e

"Unbolt drive shaft, do not let it pull apart" is this the prop shaft or something else, any tips on stopping it comeing apart, is it spring loaded, what to do if it does come apart?

Don't quite understand what your saying about keeping the old diff? Is this in case the newer one breaks or do I need to swap everything over?

Apologies so many questions, never worked on a diff, learning from write ups, you tube, the rough trax manual and you guys

      Cheers Jason

when you unbolt the diff end of the driveshaft/propshaft and drop it down it wants to slide apart. if its going to be in the way unbolt both ends and move it out of the way. just make sure the two halves don't come apart.
edit; what you can do is put a marks on both halves so if the worse thing happens you can just align the marks when you put it back together.

keep the old diff just in case you break the one your putting in and want to fit a stronger one.
