  • Help please, what's that noise?

    Gen2 3.0ltr auto.
This has just started happening today. When going up hill, a massive knock/klunk noise.
Sounds like it's coming from just forward of the gear stick.
No warning lights, doesn't seem to loose power - almost sounds like it's jumping a tooth on a gear,(auto clutch?). 4wd engages/disengages & drives fine.
    Any ideas?

I've tried to record the sound on my phone. Holy should be able to see it at the link below:

Faulty transmission solenoid causing it to engage disengage?

Have just had it in the lift Vince.

Engine & gearbox mounts look fine, ATF level is fine also.

Definitely a clunk that occurs under load, setting off or going up-hill.

No problems changing gear etc, but sounds like a drive issue - but how can it be coming from the front/mid when the front doesn't have "drive" when in 2wd?

            It's a mystery to me.

We had a problem with the rear axle pinion gear losing a tooth (not on a Surf). It sounded just like you describe.
We ignored it for a while but the next broke tooth broke and shortly after the whole lot went and made a right mess of the diff + housing.
The only odd thing is that your noise is coming from the front. I am wondering if the sound could be transmitted forwards down the prop shaft.

                My wild card idea,

What about one of the UJ's on the prop shaft..? If there was significant wear in it it could be sloppy but only when under lots of load..?

Had another look round today. The nearside CV joint looks like it might be stuffed.

Got a replacement ordered, not sure that's the culprit, but easy to replace.

                  Cheers

Best to fit free wheeling hubs, changing CV boots becomes a thing of the past then
