Poor economy

Hi all i have two third gens.
1 96 manual non-intercooled.
1 97 auto intercooled.
the newer auto intercooled one seems drink fuel a lot more than the older one. I know being an auto it should be 2mpg or so thirstier. But it seems to drink a good bit more. Any suggestions?

It's the intercooler, let me have it and your bonnet for my truck......
