  • Steering wheels connections help (now with pics)

    Hi,

I have recently picked up a standard surf steering wheel with the cruise control function to replace the wooden momo wheel that was on the jeep. I have swapped them over but the horn is not working now...does anyone know of a diagram or pic of the gen 2 steering wheel exploded so i can see what connections may be missing?

The momo had black wire that was connected to the boss and a red wire that was connected to another part of the wheel and then to the horn push buttons, it did not appear to be plugged into any kind of wiring from the loom? The surf steering wheel has one wiring plug (guessing for the cruise control) and a little spade connector that comes out of that and appears to connect to the spade connetion at the back of the horn?

I have had a scan on the web and cant see anything that helps me, forgive me if this is an easy question...electronics is not my thing lol

    Any help would be appreciated

sorry that would have been useful lol Its a 93 uk 4runner. i think i may have found the problem reading through an old thread about horn not working on 4runner forum, there is a small screw with spring that sits at the back of the stering wheel, it looked like it was a bit of an odd angle and now with and original surf wheel back on this screw kind of touches the back of the wheel on the plastic and kind of scrapes it every now and then...though this couldnt be right when tested it, looks like that has to touch the metal ring at the back of the wheel so going to take wheel off and have a look again.

If i am wrong though please feel free to suggest what may be causing the issue and i will be back shortly with some pics

So that doesnt seem to be the issue as that screw with spring type thing pictured below doesnt seem like it would ever be able to touch the metal so think i was looking at the wrong thing...what is this wee thing for?

So any ideas on what i may be missing from below if anything or what needs to be connected?

The last pic seems to show some wires that have been spliced that lead off to a wee led light that has been added to spare switch on right hand side of dash...this looks to be the remains of an old aftermarket alarm system...other than that i cant see any other plugs or things that are not connected. As this is uk 4runner i am guessing it never had cruise control an so i can see any plug that would be associated with it coming from the loom/column. There is a small wire and spade connector that comes from the plug on the steering wheel that looks to be a ground wire for the horn push but i cant see any type of ground point or connection from my loom/column

Am i supposed to have a copper ring on the back of my steering wheel that makes contact with that screw with spring/plunger type device pointed out in photos above?

The horn works when i go back to the momo, the boss for the momo wheels has a connetor coming out of it that is connected to a copper ring on that which then touches the plunger bit.

The only other pic of the back of the same 4runner wheel i can see on the web does not have this copper ring but then i'm thinking that doesnt mean it is not supposed to have one?

Can you tell this is my first time swapping a steering wheel lol Any advice appreciated
