I'm with Vince on this one, You're looking for something where the stress changes when the driveline is altered IE the UJ's.

    Hi Mark,
While I agree with you and Vince on the potential for the driveline to be the issue, I have had a Volvo XC90 that only scrapped in forward motion and was silent in reverse, caused by the stone stuck behind the back plate rotating with the direction of motion, so it could still be the issue.

Right... we have some happy progress...

Here is the mud that I removed from the sump guard:

And then today since the rain finally stopped for a bit, i managed to get the wheels off and get her sitting on wheels that are all the same size.. and it gave me the opportunity to try and locate the source of the worrying scraping sound...

Who was it that suggested a bit of flint between the disc and the back plate... well.. I owe you a beer my friend

upon removing the wheel, i thought I would have to jetwash the crap out of it and do a bit of trial and error to see if i could see anything that might be causing the noise.....

However.. look at what i was greeted with:

So.. took her for a spin.. reversed around a car park.. no noise whatsoever..

        I am a happy chappy.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

yeah... i brushed a load of mud and crap away from underneath today too, and when i took the side steps off I took the jetwash to her and cleaned a bit more underneath... pointless really as she's only going to get all mucky again soon!

Anyway.. did you get your cam belt done today? The weather here was pretty good all day to be fair.

well.. many hands make light work

If we get those springs done nice and early we can crack on with yours and cross a few jobs off the list right?

I don't drink beer but I will gladly accept a bottle of Russian Standard.
