  • Rear window jammed in up position.

Last year I needed to change a rear light bulb. But, the window motor had long since stopped working. I found an auto electrician who quickly traced the problem to a corroded wire. Once fixed, the motor whirred like a good-un and the window slid up and down without problem.

It was a double bonus. We got the bulb replaced, and I realised once more how handy a fully operational rear tailgate is!

It didn't last long. The "fix" was fine, in that the motor can be heard whirring when the key is turned. But, one day soon after, the window just refused to lower beyond an inch. I managed to raise it by hand, and just resigned myself to the fact it was good whilst it lasted.

But, complacency has once again conspired to bite me in the bum, because another rear bulb has gone, and I cannot see a way of replacing it without a fully operational tailgate.

Its one of those that needs to have the window fully lowered into the tailgate before the latch can be raised.

I've stripped the back out, and I'm faced with four bolts, and a spool of coiled metal, which I suspect will dramatically uncoil if I were to remove the bolts?

Given that the interior locks are definitely off, and that the rear wiper is definitely seated properly, is there anything that strikes you as being the obvious problem? The extent of my mechanical aptitude seems to be taking covers off, looking at any internal workings 'knowingly' (in the presence of overlooking windows/pedestrians), and then putting the covers back on.

Its doing the actual bit in the middle (the job) that throws me off balance!

I did take it to a garage, but the verdict was "I don't think we could do anything you couldn't do yourself. Just get a pair of mole grips and see what's stopping it moving". So, mole grips in hand....what should I start tugging at?

This thread should help you remove the motor to check the drive:

do prop the window with something, i think it will try to remove your fingers when the motor is removed.

Ah, that's a great help! The photograph especially so. Don't laugh, but I wouldn't have known where the motor was without it. Okay, so you are laughing

If I can at least get the window down, the tailgate dropped and the bulb replaced then that'll do me for now, so I'll tackle it on Saturday.

      Cheers, Mickey.

        Right.

I got the motor off, and the window/tailgate down. Now with the bulbs changed, it is objective achieved.

Once I'd pulled the motor apart it was obvious what the problem was. Where there should have been a rubber spacer (as per the illustration in the above link) there were only rubber fragments .

Its something I might address when its significantly warmer out there!

Cheers for the help. At least Its legal again!
