  • Rear Diff ident 97 gen3

    Hi all,

Im looking to establish what type of rear diff is in my Hilux , as previous owner had it replaced and i believe theres was some issue with wheels skipping when in 4wd. ( apparently the mechanic misaligned the splines when fitting the shaft. I find this hard to believe )

How can i find out if i have open or lsd diff? And is there any plates or markings on the diff itself to find out the ratio's?

The last thing i want is to have two different ratios diffs fitted

    Thanks

You can tell from the vin plate...

But that will only tell you what you had when it left the factory... if it's been changed who knows!

You could start by jacking it up and seeing if the front and rears take the same amount of prop turns to turn the wheels once.
    More Lift.
    More Tyres.
    More Engine.

If you jack up both rear wheels and then turn 1 wheel by hand it will be an LSD if the other wheel turns in the same direction.

Done that. Had it on the ramp today. I marked all 4 wheels and the propshaft and then spun it around. When i spin the back wheels, they align equally, but when i spun the front shaft, it was very hard to tell because of the open diff, and the wheels were sort of moving in their own direction

Anyways, no LSD. Now i miss my diff locker that i had on the cruiser.

True, but what are the odds of the op having one fitted ?

(is it the truetrac thats this type off lsd ?)
