strange noise from underneath!

I do a lot less mileage these days, and rarely get chance to hit roads where i can go over 40mph.

I have recently noticed that if i get to 50mph i can hear a slow, pulsing throb noise, gradually gets louder and then goes again once you get to around 60mph. It sounds like its coming from the front end, but i am stumped other than that.

I know last Nov when MOTd, the garage said the steering/suspensions covers would fail next time, as he could see cracks that would let dust in.

The car is generally sounding much louder and more tractor like which is worrying!

Any ideas what the problem might be that could at least guide me towards a possible cause/solution?
