after a full day of driving around parking over-night then setting out on
day 2 after a few miles the engine over-heats sometimes with the stat sometimes without also there are no signs of leakage or milky oil etc has anyone got any ideas or solutions

Your rad might be beyond its usefulness, u might have an airlocked system, if i were u i would put a bucket under the bottom hose and pull it off the rad and drain all the junk that has built up by putting a garden hose into the top hose and flushing down thru the rad. Take out the thermostat and flush down thru the engine too.
First things first... but if you want to peace of mind a pressure test done by a mechanic is worth a thought ...
