  • Rear Window

    Hello everyone.

I have had a nice old (2001) surf for a couple of years and it is being retired to be "my" hunting/fishing vehicle. We had a cold snap along with about 600mm rain over a weekend about 3 weeks ago and the combination flattened my batteries...not unheard of but weirder is that now my rear window doesn't work with the key or button. So I can't stick the dog in...and she's really worried about that as last weekend of duck season is just about on us here in NZ.

600mm of rain in two days? Just wait for the ducks to come to you.

my rear window has suddenly just stopped going down. I just replaced the rear window motor and it will go up but not down I was told it was the relay. which is a little blue box behind the tool box in the back left you have to loosen the rear back plastic surround to get the back of the tool box out and it is on the left of it. I'll bet it is that that needs replacing. As long as your rear window mech and motor is ok.

turns out because my rear window wiper wasn't fully retracted my window wouldn't wind down some safety feature so after ripping apart the entire back plasticy shrouds...... thats what it was everything is back together and working nicely now

You don't need to open the rear window to lift the tailgate on a 2001 Surf.

He's only had it a couple of years, maybe he never noticed.

              Bushwhacker,

The window needs to open down into the rear tailgate for it to drop and open. If I could get the window to move down a little bit to clear I'm pretty sure I could get the rear open but then I'd have a glass tailgate so not a practical idea but might make working on it easier.

              Glasshopperus,

Nice idea but no. It's not the wiper.

There is "click" in behind the pannel in the back when the switch is engaged both up and down suggesting that all the electrics are switching fine so my bet is the motor.

Cheers for all the input here.

                So it isn't a 2001 Surf then.

Have you pressed the window lock button on the driver's door panel by accident?

If the drive motor plates have torn (rubber damper portion) you might still be able to hear the motor running.
It could just be really stuck if it's not ben used in a while.
Get someone to press the switch as you try pulling the glass down into frame.

You have surf that is older than 1996 so no point getting arse with Vince. Do as Kerrsurf suggested as it won't open until fully down as the lock won't lift until it is. Failing that climb in the back and strip it down.
