Tailgate lock-key wont turn

Gen 3 Surf -I have been trying to use the key to put window down at back to put stuff in the boot rather than keep swinging spare and opening tailgate. But the key wont turn the lock. The window works from the inside switch.

Am I missing something?? Will I have to dismantle the whole tailgate mechanism from inside the back panel?

Any help gratefully received.

Has it worked before?
Maybe the lock has been changed in the past?

Maybe you're not waiting long enough for the glass to lower? I have to turn my key and hold it for a couple of seconds before the glass will lower.

WD40 in the lock, and on the key.
My door locks get "lazy" and a little spray seems to speed them up for a while...

Mine jammed up on the 4runner, cheapish part from Toyota and easy to replace on the bus. Dunno if the 3rd gen is different, so I may be offering utterly useless advice.

it just wont turn either way-I have the original keys so wouldnt have thought lock would have been changed but who knows-going to dismantle and have a look see over weekend-thanks for replies
