After much deliberation, and viewing virtually every post on the subject, I have at last carried this out.
From this experience I have attached the method I developed that worked.
The one part that did not work was the dropping of the sump pan. There was no way this would come off without removing the first exhaust section as this passes directly under the pan. If you have a similar exhaust set up do not break the pan flange face as this is very difficult to clean and smear new gasket material through the small gap available.
Using this method I did not spill any oil and the flushing part only took about 30 minutes to complete. Sump pan removal would probably have taken about an hour if I had completed it as planned.
I combined this job with undersealing, so had the car jacked up high which helps with access for the the flushing.
