  • Diesel Escort van

I know this is a Surf forum but I need some help.

I helped a friend change his fuel filter on his Escort van and bled it got it running etc.

Now it seems to be hunting / pulsing.

Any ideas what it could be? Is there a specific order they should be bled in?

Appologies if this is badly written etc I'm on my phone.

There were 2 types of fuel filter fitted to diesel escorts that I worked on . A screw on type similar to the Surf (good) and a 'sandwich' type (very bad). The sandwich one always draws air in via the seals and the o ring on the bolt . I hated changing them as always gave probs after with air leaks into the system.

As mentioned above the sandwich type fuel fiter draws air in if the seals are not fitted correctly also it's common for the diaphragm to give up under the priming plunger when you try and bleed up a new filter.

Also try bypassing the fuel heater (black box with two pipes going to it normally beside the filter) as they are prone to drawing air, just disconnect the pipes to it and join them together, take the electrical connector off too and make sure the leak off pipes between the injectors are in good order.

Hopefully some of that should help

Thanks Guys - it was the bottom seal that was leaking a little - a bit of sealant round it the seal distorts when you tighten it up, bad design (or cheap parts bought by friend)
