does anyone know what coused my drivers side half shaft to snap and lose its wheell backing plate and soes still attached to axel ?

Badly fitted or damaged wheel bearing.

Hi and welcome! Very much looking forward to your future contributions. More detail is probably required to solve your current difficulties. Have you been driving like a stereotypical "scooby" owner? Have you recently been partaking in "Ganja"? Hopefully someone with more experience will be along, like Albannach, to help you. In the meantime I suggest you push some Rowntree's Randoms into the differential breather as a safety measure. A pink helicopter, a blue hatstand and any oboe will do until a permanent fix is attempted.
