Steering and rattle

Once again I turn to all you good Surf people for some advice. My Gen 2 has quite a loud rattling coming from the front when driving along, I have found there is some in and out movement on the drive shaft, not a lot but enough I assume to make this noise, is this a problem and what is it? Also I have quite a bit of play in the steering which would appear to make it wander and I'm forever correcting it to keep it in a straight line, any ideas what I should be looking at/replacing? I need to add to the rattling bit that it doesn't seem to do it when 4WD is engaged.
Any help/pointers would be hugely appreciated.

try searching for "bronze bushes" as it could be these at fault
Also check all the steering linkages and track rod ends for play again this can be found with a little searching on the site.

I've found that the rubbers on the track rod ends have turned to a nasty virtually non existent mess, I assume this won't help!?!

I would replace them anyway if the boot has perished.
