4WD Gearbox

I have a 1997 Hilux Surf 3l Auto - with the snow falling I want to know how the 4WD gearbox works - On the dash board four wheels light up in green when I press the 4WD button and if I move the stick into one of the other three positions on the Orange light flashes - does this denote a diff lock or something else.

Yep, center light is for the diff lock.

Thanks that's very helpful - hope I haven't trashed the box by driving it (and reversing it) with the diff on.
