    Hi guys

Was out in the truck last night and on my way home there was a strange metallic crunching from what appears to be the rear diff

Went to check it today and it seems fine although under load while driving its almost like a shudder and he sound of agressive tyre tread rumble

Im only running mile pattern 32's and they never made any noise so im guessing its not that

    Jobs to do tomorrow ......

    Check diff oil
    Check prop UJ's fir play
    Check centre bearing

Anything else i might have missed?

    Its a '95 3.0 gen2 btw

    Cheers

Could be diff, but they are pretty tough, check the UJ's first, but remove the prop, they often get rusty and tight, so you can't feel any slack just by twisting each side on the truck.

Also check the rear wheel bearings, but you should have oil all over the brakes if they are that bad.

    (no center bearing on Surfs)

Right..... A quick look underneath found a couple of problems

      Diff oil was low
About 2-3 mm movement in the rear UJ
When removing the diff filler bolt it was pressurised so the breathers shot as well

How much movement should there be in the uj when its new ?
Do i clean out the breather or fit a better high level one? ( i don't get off road much so i dont think i'll need a high level setup)

Hopefully this will sort it, if not im just going to shove a new axle in it so i do t sod around with it for too long

Was the propshaft on or off the truck?

Not necessarily. Was it a positive or negative pressure? Positive does suggest the breather is blocked and should be replaced. Negative suggests the breather is OK (it's a one way valve, it lets air out, but not in). Was the diff hot or cols when tested?

        None.

Prop movement was the same on and off the truck,

Pressure was positive and the breather is borked

After draining the diff the oil was black/brown and really frothy

Now i need to find a breather rapid as i need the truck for work

            Diff was cold when tested

              The UJ is gubbed then.

Doesn't matter, now that you've removed and tested the breather. If the diff. was cold and the breather was working properly, I'd expect a negative pressure (assuming all the seals are sealing).

After draining and renewing the diff oil. The shuddering has eased off a fair. It, im guessing the combination of shot diff oil along with a blocked breather is the bulk of the problem

New uj and it should be fine

Am i safe to assume that if i take the prop off the truck i could stick it
In 4wd and use it as a front wheel drive untill My parts arrive? So i can still get to work without shafting the prop and diff

Yup, I've done that before, it feels very odd pulling out on full lock with a bit of power in front wheel drive, but works fine. Just take it easy.
