Hi all just another thread regarding the viscous fan , a way to tell if your fan needs new silocon oil , if you spin the fan by hand when engine is cold it should only spin a couple of times , if it looks like it,s free wheeling then you need to top up oil , sold in sachetes from toyota or if you want the thicker oil there is an ebay 4x4 store in Aus selling for $20 a tube you would need 2 tubes for the job , also note if you spin the fan by hand when it is hot it will free wheel, best way to split fan if there is no fill hole is to use a hand held impact driver and hammer, once you remove bolts try to twist etheir sides of the fan housing in opposite directions as it wont split easy as it is practicaly vacume sealed but it will come apart very easy to do , P.s also those thinking of replacing with an electric fan remember if the electric fan stuff,s up it stops spinningand then it,s too late ,where the vicous fan turns on a pulley and wont stop spinning even if oil is gone , another way to check the fan is to put a timing light on it as it should be spinning the same speed as the timing belt , cheers hope this helps a few
