  • Correcting the mileage

    Hi all,

My speedo and odometer have stopped working.....after trouble shooting with some VERY HELPFUL advice from some of yee, I've decided to buy a second hand speedo from Alan (TinTin).

My question is....when I plug in the new speedo....will the mileage be adjusted back to what my Surf has done? Or will it read what Alan's speedo has registered?

Also...my surf doesn't seem to have any conversion to miles, and the speedo face is in KMs only.....which suits me as we use kms in Ireland. When I put the new speedo in...if that has been converted is it easy to swap back??

    THANKS

    Ben

    It won't change

Not many are actually converted to miles, most just have an overlay. If Alan's one looks like it's in miles, just swap the face with your old one.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

      Brilliant...thanks for the help!!!!

And can I adjust the new speedo so that it reads what the mileage should be? (assuming the mileage was correct when I bought the surf...) Which I presume there is no legal issues with...as there are higher miles on my speedo than the new one... But is it technically possible?

It is possible and not illegal (in the UK), but I wouldn't bother. Quite often, once an odometer has been clocked, the digits don't line up properly.

Just take a picture of the old one beside the new one, so that both odometers can be seen, and keep it with the rest of your documents.

I have just changed over the clocks in my Surf to a cable driven unit to suit a manual gearbox conversion.

I found at the back of the speedo there are drive wheels on each side of the odometer.

Best I can figure is that the driven side turns via a wormgear to increment the milage & the far side (small grey sprocket) turns with the 10's of thousands digit & will trigger the T-Belt warning lamp at the correct interval.

If you remove a single screw at the top of the mechanism, you can turn the grey sprocket manually & adjust the 10's of thousands digit independant of the other digits.

When I finished, all of the digits lined up just right & the milage now matches the recorded milage for the truck. (More or less, I actually added a couple thousand miles due to the increments being 10k).
