Help needed with my nuts.

I'm trying to do the viscous fan oil change... but I'm having a bugger of a time removing the nuts that hold the fluid coupling on. So far as I can make out, all I can fit between the fluid coupling and the water pump is a spanner, and whenever I give it a bit of force the thing just spins round. Any one got any advice for getting the thing off?!
