  • Slight play on steering rack mountings?

There was an advisory on the MOT done on Tuesday regarding "Slight play on steering rack mountings".
What could this mean and what will need to be done to rectify the problem? If you have some idea of cost, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Change the rack mount bushes. Not expensive. They're about £20 from Roughtrax or Milners.

Got to do mine before MOT in October.

I got this on MOT advisory as well (along with blowing exhaust). The mechanic said it wasn't something that needed fixing immediately. It was more something to cover their backs just incase it was spotted on a vehicle check and they hadn't advised on it. Probably will get it fixed though.

I wll order some from Roughtrax and get a garage mechanic to fit them for me as I am physically limited in what I can do. Hopefully labour rates will not too much.

Shouldn't be, its not that hard, 2 hours max, half that if you've done others. Its the same as a LandCruiser Colorado.

I did my steering rack for the same reason 2 weeks ago. I also polybushed the anti-roll bar while I was working in that area. I was suprised at how loose the original bushed were in their housing and how much more precise the steering is now.
My wife complained last week that the Surf was too sensitive and now went around a corner each time she turned the wheel a bit!!
Funny, I always thought that cars were meant to do that!
              Good luck,

On the 4crawler website I noticed they are now doing bronze bushes for the steering might solve the problem as it does seem to be a common fault with the surf!

Polybushes should be much better than the OEM rubber ones as they shouldn't deteriorate as quickly.

I took it to a local garage to check it out and they cannot understand why a MOT advisory has been issued. Although the steering does feel as if it has some play it it or drifting when it is on the road, it could just be me after driving a Mondeo for the past 8 months. I wonder if the tracking or similar is an issue.

I notice that the tyre pressures are 2.8 bar on Continental Contact 265 70 16 tyres. Could this be the problem?

I would say that 2.8 bar tyre pressure is too much for most purposes except when fully loaded. Try 2.0 bar for everyday use.

Thanks for reminding me. I re-checked at the servcie station and all are at 2.0 bar. I mis-read my Halfords pressure gauge as it was in psi and not bar.
Truck still seems to wander a bit although steering bushes looks to be okay. Maybe a tracking issue. If you jog the steering wheel when stationery, the wheels move immediately.
Difficult to describe I suppose, but it seems that the steering is very light on initial movement of about two inches and then feels normal and does its thing. When going around a bend to the left or right, you turn the steering wheel and it is almost as if there is a slight delay before it catches properly.
Maybe Apache or someone else near Worcester will volunteer to take it around the block for me to and advise whether ther is an issue or whether it is me being paranoid!
