  • Steering issue !!

Managed to break my surf big time last week.... caught a flint at the side of the road, which got caught in between my tyre and wheel.... it popped the tyre from the rim, making a bit of a mess of the rim and launched us up into the air, to come down with a thud on the passenger side front...........
Replaced the wheel, to find I had no steering, turns out we snapped the centre steering rod, which we have now replaced.... courtesy of Andy on Ebay !!!! Now its been tracked , it drives better but the steering doesn't seem to want to centralise after you turn a corner..... We've checked to see if anything else has been bent, but can't see anything..... any ideas ?????
    Thanks in advance.

Tracking just adjusts the toe-in/out to correct tyre scrub.
The camber angles need checking if the truck won't track in a straight line. The wheels should both be tilted in at the top when pointing straight ahead.

When the centre steering rod was fitted I am sure the cambers were corrected, the tracking was done by some fandangle machine...... could the steering box have a problem ?

A fandangle machine is only as good as the bloke interpreting it. Take it back and get it checked again.

True, but the guy with this machine, is a friend and trusted mechanic...... He spent a long time tracking my surf .... so am happy its done correctly....
How can I get the camber checked ??? Who would know the correct setting ??? We also replaced one steering damper with the rod ... could that be a problem ???

You say earlier that the camber was checked? Is the machine used a full 4 wheel alignment or does it just do toe in / toe out? The machines the alignment guys use here, are full systems with dedicated 4 post hoist rigged to a pc, they align every movement on each wheel. Check this link for the 'how to' but don't attempt it on your own........

It's most likely the camber is out on the passenger side front wheel as you say it came down hard enough to snap the relay rod.

Where the lower wishbones pivot, there are bolts with markings around them, these are the camber adjusters. Did your alignment guy check/adjust them? He would have had raise the truck up on a lift or stand in a pit to turn them as they are about four grunts tight!.
