I put a new set of Monroe front dampers on my Gen 3 yesterday. The Mot last week had an advisory about the bushes being perished.
When I got the old (original Toyota) dampers out, both lower rubber bushes had a permenent twist in them which I suspect was causing the rubber to split with age. Is this a common issue?
When fitting the struts back onto the car, the new bushes didn't line up properly with the holes in the lower bracket when the top plate was loosely bolted up. Sorted this by putting the spring compressors back on with the strut on the car to loosen the spring and twisting the damper body a bit until the holes lined up.
So far, I have been impressed with the Monroes. I have them on the back as well and the ride is definitely smoother. Will they last 190,000km like the original Toyota ones? Time will tell!!
