  • HOW TO: replace rear SHOCKS on 3rd gen?

    Hi all.

    Ive got the wheels off.
Ive got the bottom nut off the shock and removed it from the bolt...

Now, HTF do I get the shock off? Theres no way I can get to the inside top nut - do I just rotate the whole shock thus undoing the top nut, till it falls out????

    advice please! pictures better......!

      them stubborn shocks

Right, what you have to do is get a small tame monkey to climb up inside the chassis, unplug the hard/soft box of tricks if you have it, get said monkey to put a socket on the nut you find underneath, amid the dirt and debris and then turn the whole shock with a pair of grips on the shroud... until the shroud collapses. THEN you rip the shroud off, grind a flat spot on the shock shaft, and use your grips on that and turn.....

Cheers Si Tate for confirming thats the way to do it.

I remember a similar exercise on the 2.4 a few years back, but I'd forgotten the way to do it, as Growler and Anthony did most of the hard work then!!

and now its pi55ing down, so it waits until the morning.

      beer time.

No no no Andy, the shroud is attached to the shock body, just grip the shroud & it turns the whole lot.
The shroud is spot welded to the piston at the top.
I'd send you my monkey but the postage would be too much.

yer, I know, but I remember we collapsed the shroud doing the 2.4 shocks, perhaps it was thinner material, or rusted, but either way is just ripped open, so we had to grind a flat spot on the main shaft and turn that.

It turns out I did know what to do, you just jogged my memory!

like the pics in your thread by the way, very useful to see how things sit.

          cheers for the call m8.

Not sure if this has been suggested before, but it worked on my Gen 3 rear shocks last weekend.

Drill a 7mm hole through both sides of the shroud about 2/3rds of the way up and off centre (to miss the chrome rod in the middle). Insert pin punch or long screwdriver to act as a lever.
Turn the top nut until the punch/screwdriver hits either the bumpstop or the chassis and then you can undo the nut with the whiole lot held solid.
