  • 3rd Gen Spare wheel carrier

    Hiya,

Daft question, this always annoyed me a bit when I first had the truck, and is annoying me again

With the rear swing out spare wheel carrier, should there be some sort of spacer or something from the factory?

The reason I ask is my spare tyre is pressed against the bars and it has deformed the sidewall it's nothing facy just factory sized wheel (265 I think?) - I don't think the carrier is bent.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

    Thanks Charlie.

I've got 265/75/16's and my spare is doing the same thing. A wheel spacer would be nice, I'm going to look into that! When I put the bigger tires on it made it harder to reach the swingout release, especially with gloves on, a spacer could fix all that and prevent the sidewall from deforming, good idea!

Want to go halves on a pair of El Cheapo spacers?

I'm afraid shipping would cost more than just buying a pair, lol. I'm actually going to see if I can buy a single from a local shop.

I priced out a 1.25" bolt on spacer (uses stock lugs to mount, has its own lugs to mount spare to) yesterday. $50CAN, more than I wanted to spend, but I think it's a better option than a slip on as you can gain more clearance, and that's what I need. I think I might pick it up, I'll post pics if/when I do.

                    Great link!

Nothing missing on mine... I guess they weren't designed to take full thickness spares?

If you added enough spacers to get the room I need, you'd run out of threads to keep the lugnuts from risking loosening off over time. I'm of the opinion spending the extra money for the spacer adapter is worth it in this case.

                        mornin' all

I have exactly the same issue with mine, probably made worse by having a 275/65 MT tyre.

Tried a 6mm universal spacer (borrowed off a mate's civic) but although the tyre now cleared the carrier (by about 4mm) i can't get the caravan hitch stabiliser to engage properly without swinging the spare out whih makes hitching up really awkward

Decided the take off the spacer and live with it

I found a guy with 3x 1.25" spacers, who sold me a single for $25US shipped. I'll update once I get the piece and install it.

Well I got the 1.25" spacer the other day, and snapped some pics of before to show what the problem was, and a couple with the spacer installed:

And here's a couple of the finished product! Lots of room to get at the release even with gloves on, and not more carrier bar/sidewall squishing!
