rattle driving me mad

hi all sorry havent posted in ages bin mad busy , now my trucks driving me mad it has developed a slight rattle from the nsf over small bump in the road but not speed bumps, so i jacked it up and had a good look round and a wiggle now evrything seemed perfect apart from i grabbed hold of the outer cv joint and i found that i can wiggle it about only slightly tho but im 100% sure this is my rattle im sure its not normal is it ? now what do i have to do to stop it because its driving me mad

Replace the cv if it's worn.

thanks for the advice bin doing bit of hunting round the site and from what i have read it sound like its the bronze bushes , but got big road trip in the surf in a couple days so will have to wait till i get home, dont think it will do any harm as its only very slight movmant and from what some of the threads say on here some people love with the rattle for years , i saw a thread from tonyn saying once the driveshaft is out just use a drift to get the old bushes out but how hard is it to get the new ones in ???

Aaron,how do.Put up with the rattle till it drove me daft,got the inner bushs fron Roughtrax,£13.50 each,outer are £30!!!,only doing inner first,new dust seals,hopefully doing it midweek,will let you know how I get on.Toyota do three sizes of shims,fit on outer end of cv shaft,might be a quick/cheap fix,Alan

Hi Al these end shims that you say toyota do in diffrent sizes do you know how much they are? and these are the shims that determin the end float am i right? do you know what it should be ?

Aaron,as Ploddit(Pat) mentions,just have a look at the previous thread.Shims are available in three sizes,1.8,2 and 2.5 if memory serves me well.They are only about £2 each and easily obtainable over the toyota counter.My local bloke is very helpful,even printed off the correct diagram for me .Not to be too technical but I dont know what end float Toyota build in to the part itself,
In simple terms,you measure the end float and purchase the appropriate shim,the shim takes up the end float,it doesnt determine it ,if you follow my drift.P.S.,if I ask my daughter nicely she might send you a copy of the diagram so you could have a look,Alan

It's not a bearing, just a spacer. They are available in 1.8, 2 and 2.5mm.You may have excess endfloat in drive shafts.

The drive shaft has a spacer and snap ring. Replace the bolt and washer and pulling on the washer measure the gap between spacer and snap ring.This should be no more than 1mm. Normal endfloat is between 0.075 and 0.690mm. If more measure the thickness of spacer. If this is 2.25mm the there may be wear in steering knuckle bushes. If spacer is less than 1.8mm then a thicker(2.25mm) replacement spacer may fix the excess endfloat.

Spacers won't help with worn bushes, they (may) take up end float, but that's all. A gubbed bronze bush will always be a gubbed bronze bush.

Rattles

middle picture is the inner bronze bearing,number 43211 &43212 on second diagram,picture 4 is the spacer(or whatever some people want to call it).
I dont believe it is shown on either diagram.
No doubt someone will pull me up about it if it is.

Picture 5 shows both together.

As to whether shims,spacers,call them what you will are required,I appreciate what a forum contributor said previous,if a bearing is knackered ,then its knackered,but at what point does it become knackered,.25mm,.5mm,1.00mm, if Toyota and /roughtrax market these shims/spacers then they are there to be used.

It seems a bit overkill if you replace all the bearing when there is only .5mm of wear on the bearing surface,I would prefer to take up that wear with a shim and thus prolong the life of the bearing and save money into the bargain.

The shim takes up the end float on the driveshaft. It has nothing to do with wear on the bearing. You can shim away untill your wee heart is content, but if the shaft is rattling in the bush, it'll rattle until you replace the bushes.
