  • Hi there/timing belt question

New to the forum, hello to one and all!

I have a 1992 2.4 TD Surf that I brought back from Spain last year. It has around 93000 and the timing belt light is on. Does anyone know roughly how much will this cost me to have changed?

    Thanks in advance

    Timing belt

Rob,how do and welcome to surfing.

Mine is a 3 litre, did the timing belt about 6 months ago.Got to be truthful here and say I dont know too much about 2.4s.On the 3 litre there are four bolts and two clips holding the cover on.Remove the cover, line up the marks on the various cogs ,there is a tensioner to the belt, two small bolts and its off, remove belt and replace with new.Turn engine over with a spanner and check the marks are still in alignment.
All should be ok,a belt from Milners is about £15,if you are handy with a spanner you could do it in two to three hours, minimal cost.
Had a look at the Ellery manual and the Haynes, both say not too difficult, depends on your level of confidence to do it.Alan

Allow all day if doing it yourself and not done it before, a garage shouldn't be charging for more than 3-4 hours, but its hard to do it in less unless you do them everyday.

Also, at the risk of bursting your milage bubble, it will only come on 100,000kms from last reset or new, so no way it can come on at 90k, it must have done more miles than that. sorry..

It's pointless just doing the belt too. On a 2.4 you should replace the belt, the tensioner, the idler, the water pump, the front camshaft oil seal and the front crankshaft oil seal.

Seems to be TBH for a normal garage, I charge £50 labour on a 3.0 belt, and thats with a guilty feeling! Unless doing an service to, then its free fitting. It really is that easy.

Plus parts can't come to that much? Plus I rarely fit a whole belt kit unless specifically asked to or find need to, so that makes it cheaper, can count on one hand how may times I've needed to change the idler and tensioner.

2.4's are whole different thing though.

I`ve no doubt i could of done it, had a look at the how to, seems pretty easy its just time i dont have much of and its the timing. its one of those things that i`d prefer to do at least once under supervision just in case. the possible consequences of getting it wrong are too disastrous and so add a certain amount of pressure to something thats probably easy for the veteran. botched it once doing a Citroen flat 4 that i was unfortunate enough to own. killed it
Bet it took them twice as long as it would take for you to do it anyway, hopefully i wont need it doing again for moons

Thanks for the responses and welcome everyone

Just to clear things up, I have zero mechanical experience so wouldn't be all that confident doing it myself. However if there's a decent guide for the 2.4 or its the same as the 3.0 then I may give it a (supervised) go.

Also with regards to the mileage Tony, my speedo is in miles not kms, would that make a difference? The light came on when it hit 90,000...

The 2.4 is nothing like the 3.0. A 3.0 belt will take about 45 minutes, a 2.4 will take 4-8 hours to do

Your speedo may be in MPH, but your odometer is probably still in KM, if this is the case; it's been clocked...

4-8 hours?! So not cheap then. Guess I need to get ringing round for some quotes.

Not happy to hear its been clocked but then there's not a great deal I can do about it now! Not sure why whoever did it felt the need to either, when my usual mechanic MOT'd it back in September he said he couldn't believe what good condition it was in. Not a spot of rust anywhere thanks to several years in Spain and very little by the way of wear and tear as it was used for most of that time as a warehouse truck. Strange...

A professional should be able to do it in an easy 4 hours, an amateur will take much more (especially the first time)

I should have said 'probably been clocked'. The light can't come on before 100k km.
