  • Gearbox Seals

My truck is currently haemorrhaging ATF, from the front seals, at an alarming rate and I need to get something done about it soon! I'm looking at getting some quotes to have it done as I don't have the inclination to do it myself.

My question is; while the 'box is out, apart from the (2?) gearbox seals and the rear crankshaft seal, is there anything it would be prudent to replace? The rear core plug for instance, is it worthwhile replacing that?

Re core plug, I'd have a good look at it and see how it looks, I've never had to replace one in all the years.

If you're confident of replacing it then nothing to really lose, but I wouldn't say it was a weak spot on these trucks., not sure how easy it would be to fit properly with access issues of body work. (not sure how high up the block it is)

If your truck has had a head go in the past and the hoses are crunchy with rust then I'd be a little more suspicious of it and give it a hard poke.

I think it's on its original head, the hoses aren't crunchy and when I flushed it last year, it wasn't that bad at all. I'll leave the core plug.

Yeah I'd probably replace the vanes on the water pump and swap out the glow plug relay. Best bet is to check with the professional who gives the best quote.

          Why?

I'd rather check with my fellow professionals on here, then instruct whoever does the job accordingly.

My bad - I thought this was one of your 'funny sarcastic' posts so didn't think it warranted a serious answer considering you are a qualified mechanic.

I will bow out gracefully now...

I am a qualified mechanic, but I don't know everything about every vehicle. Tony and some of the others, (you included sometimes, Rob) know more about Surfs than me, but I've forgotten more about old Bedfords, ERFs, Fodens etc. than they will ever know. Horses for courses...

Now that I'm getting older and have more disposable income, I'm disinclined to lie under trucks to remove stupidly heavy things like automatic gearboxes. I'd rather pay someone to do it for me. I just don't want to pay £700 twice for the sake of a £30 seal or a 99p gasket.

Sorry Andy - I must be getting too used to your posts in the general section......

£700 in my book has me getting the beers in and having a 'fun' sunday..

I'd rather sort out my gearbox than mess around sorting out an awkward cupboard in my days off
