Scary hope mine never goes wrong, but it's next to impossible to get any internal parts for these things, a mechanic friend with his '95 BMW 525 tds has discovered.

It's a good tutorial and it's something I did when I was an apprentice. Nowadays, I wouldn't dream of doing something as specialised as that, it's a grownup's job.
